Julian Marley (born June 4, 1975, in London), son of reggae icon Bob Marley, has been carrying on his father’s musical legacy since the late 1980s, infusing his deep roots in roots reggae with a wider range of influences : jazz, soul, and more digital sounds…
Raised between England and Jamaica, Julian was only five years old when his father passed away. Despite his young age, he had already begun learning to play the guitar, drums, and keyboards. At 17, he moved to Jamaica, studied with reggae legends, and founded the Ghetto Youths Foundation with his brothers to help underprivileged children. Julian formed his own band, The Uprising, and recorded his first album, « Lion in the Morning », at Tuff Gong in 1996, which propelled him into the spotlight. From then on, he embarked on a series of world tours that took him to the Americas, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, Jamaica, Ethiopia, and Ghana as part of the Africa Unite events. He collaborated on numerous musical projects with his brothers and sisters and with renowned artists such as Lauryn Hill (as a musician). His album « Awake » received a Grammy Award nomination and won Best Album of the Year at the International Reggae and World Music Awards in New York. Following « As I Am », he returned with « Colors of Royal » in 2023, which finally earned him the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2024. Since his early days, Julian Marley has played a significant role in the « conscious » music movement. Although he has built a formidable reputation by transcending musical genres, every project this musical visionary undertakes remains imbued with spirituality, morality, and profound messages.
